Read the lovely review from this group after their Tastes & Tales of the Sea Tour! Our tour rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (5/5) Embarking on the Kodiak walking tour with Ani Thomas on September 20, 2023, was nothing short of an enchanting journey into the rich, pulsating world of Alaska's commercial fishing industry. Our adventure began as we stepped off the Holland American cruise ship, Noordam, and were warmly greeted by Ani, our guide, whose passion and knowledge about the fishing world were immediately palpable. A Riveting Exploration into the Fishing World: Ani masterfully navigated us through the second largest commercial fishing port in the country, offering a rare, behind-the-scenes look into the bustling activity that keeps this industry alive year-round. Her detailed explanations about the various harvests, the intricate gear, meticulous processing methods, and the historical context of the industry were not only informative but also incredibly engaging. We very much enjoyed the intro to several of the local fishermen. We were enveloped in tales of booms and busts, survival and loss at sea, and the profound impacts of earthquakes and tsunamis on the fishing community. Ani's storytelling, enriched by her evident deep connection to the fishing world, painted vivid images of the challenges and triumphs experienced by those who call the ocean their workplace. A Touching Tribute at the Fisherman’s Memorial: The tour culminated at the Fisherman’s Memorial, a poignant reminder of the risks and sacrifices made by those in the fishing industry. Here, Ani allowed us to step into the shoes of a fisherman, quite literally, by offering us the opportunity to try on a survival suit. This immersive experience not only brought home the realities faced by fishermen but also fostered a deep-seated appreciation for their resilience and bravery. Ani Thomas - A Guide Par Excellence: Ani was not merely a guide; she was a storyteller, historian, and educator, all rolled into one. Her ability to weave facts with heartfelt stories provided a rich, multi-dimensional view of the fishing industry. Her enthusiasm was infectious, her knowledge extensive, and her genuine, warm demeanor made the tour feel like a journey with a well-acquainted friend. As we stepped back onto the Noordam, we carried with us not just memories, but stories that resonated, knowledge that enlightened, and a newfound respect for the commercial fishing industry. Ani Thomas and her Kodiak walking tour have etched an indelible mark on our Alaskan adventure, providing us with insights and experiences that will be cherished for a lifetime. In conclusion, Ani’s tour is a must-experience spectacle that delves deep into the soul of Alaska's commercial fishing world, offering a perspective that is as profound as it is enchanting. A true Alaskan gem! PS….we also very much appreciated the unexpected ‘Salmon Charcuterie’ treats at the local ‘brewery’……outstanding!! Wishing you the best….
